The World of Dragon Lore
Gaia
![]()
Gaia is a beautiful and vast ocean world, interspersed with islands harbouring
small pockets of civilization. The lands, people, races and beasts who have
settled this huge world are too varied and numerous to be known by any one
person, however in our small corner of the Draconic Sea the lands are thus:
Draconis Rock
This holy site takes the form of an impressive and majestic spire of rock,
reaching up from the sea like a gigantic needle and seemingly penetrating the
very sky. Such is its height it can be seen from all the surrounding islands.
Rumour and myth have it that this was once a mighty Draconian Citadel, but now
it is devoid of life; the terrible reefs and currents surrounding its base keep
all but the most devout pilgrims away.
Aeavelmoor
The two main races to have settled this pleasant island are Elves and Humans,
with other races making up approximately a tenth of the five thousand strong
population. The land is abundant enough that the races can live in harmony; the
Humans tending towards farming the plains and inhabiting the occasional quaint
village, while the Elves make their homes in the light forests that cover
roughly half of the land.
The port town of Fairgale is at the southern point of the island, allowing trade
routes between Valencia to the east and Maelbrook to the northwest. Aeavelmoor’s
main exports include milk, honey and crops; with the Elves contributing
beautiful carved wooden goods, bows, arrows and wines made from the fruits of
the forests. Its main imports consist of raw materials such as metal and stone.
Aeavelmoor lies due south from Draconis Rock, approximately two days journey by
ship.
Valencia
Valencia lies east northeast from her sister island Aeavelmoor and is about
three quarters of her size. The journey between the two takes approximately
eight days by ship if the winds are favourable. It is a barren and windswept
island yet densely populated; roughly half of its surface taken over by mines
and quarries, mostly found in the northeast and worked by the vast Dwarven and
Goblin population. The Goblins also live and work in the refineries and towns
found to the southwest.
Valencia is home to some three thousand dark elves who huddle together, creating
their towns in the north near the twisted thorny trees that grow despite the
strong winds that whip across the barren land. The remaining five percent of the
overall population is half Human, half a varied mix of other races. These tend
to live around the coast, making a living from the fishing industry.
The famous Graelhelm Forge is in the centre of the island; it is the largest
forge and refinery in the Draconic Sea, employing half of the Dark Elves and a
good percentage of the Goblin and Dwarven population.
Because Valencia’s soil is unsuitable for farming or indeed growing much of
anything at all, its main imports are crops, clothing and other food, while its
main exports are raw metal ores and stone, along with the ornate and beautifully
worked metal products that the Dwarves are famed for, such as jewellery, metal
armour and weapons.
Maelbrook
The largest of the islands in the Draconic Sea;
Maelbrook is northwest of Aeavelmoor and north north west of Draconis Rock. Its
population number some ten thousand and are scattered and varied; three thousand
are Human and Elves, but a mix of other races account for the other seven
thousand.
Maelbrook’s terrain is as varied as its inhabitants, there are large areas of
woodland and plains but the island is predominantly unmapped and despite its
large population very little is known of its wilds and every year fortune
seekers and adventurers come here from every corner of the Draconic Sea, hoping
for fame, wealth and glory. Those coming to explore begin their journey at
Brooks Eye, known as Port Adventure by the locals. This bustling port town at
the southern-most tip of the island is the gateway into Maelbrook, indeed it is
the only port on the entire island; the rest of Maelbrook’s coast is ringed with
deadly reefs, shifting sandbars and other natural obstacles making it too
treacherous to land a large vessel elsewhere.
Waterbridge Village is on the north coast; it is a famed for its coral; used in
jewellery and certain potions, and also the only known source of Cushweed in the
Draconian sea. Cushweed is a rare seaweed much sought after for its many healing
properties. However to reach Waterbridge Village you must cross through the
Gremlin Woods; a forest cursed according to legend. The village itself has its
own dangers; it is close to the unmapped wilderness.
There are myths and stories aplenty, both of the Gremlin Woods and of
Waterbridge Village, of the strange creatures seen in those parts and of those
who have disappeared, never to return, however the more stout hearted travellers
and traders still journey there, and adventurers undaunted by the stories set
off for Waterbridge Village regularly. Many do not return, but could this be
because they have disappeared, or are still in search of fortune and unable to
contact their kin?
