Dragon Lore Playing Guide
The following text will hopefully explain everything you need to know to be able to play Dragon Lore LARP
Dragon Lore LARP is set in a different universe and time. It has high fantasy content with elves trolls, goblins and magic. You as a player must suspend belief for the duration of the “game” and immerse yourself into this world. It is set in the same era as the Earth’s “dark ages” so that means no electronic devices no engines and no guns. During the duration of the “game” you will be pitted against dark and evil forces. Your actions may decide the outcome of this entire world. This will not just be decided by the speed of your sword or your skill with a bow. There will be other tasks that involve solving mysteries, puzzles and traps. So let us explain the basics of playing Dragon Lore LARP
Character Representation
You have selected your character, you have chosen your skills, spells etc so now onto what to do next. All you need to do is to think about how you would like to play them. You could even go as far as creating a background story about them. You can do as little or as much as you want to. It is just to help to bring to life your character. It helps you understand how they would react in certain situations. Are they a talker rather then a fighter as sometimes talking is the better option? Do they have certain alliances with other races, do they hate or loath a race for something that race did to them in the past. It’s all up to you. Use your imagination and give your character some depth as this will enhance your time at Dragon Lore LARP no end.
Costumes
To play your character we ask you to try and represent what your character would be wearing for that time period. While we don’t expect you use professional costumes we do not want to see jeans/combat trousers trainers. If you need help please ask us via the forums or drop us an email. We will endeavour to help you in any way possible.
Combat
Ok onto combat, this will happen, you will have a chance to pit yourself against foes of all types be it a rabid monster created by some dark and evil magical mystic. Or a travelling human war band that has come to raid your encampment.
As per the general rules we don’t use real weapons we use
safe latex weapons and we also do not hit each other with full force, we pull
our blows enough so even a child can be hit. We also do not go for the head or
groin area also no not intentionally go to strike a lady’s chest (She might
retaliate in the same manner but in a far more painful place).
If you are hit you must role play being hit by that weapon. Just as if
you were hit by a real sword/axe/hammer/arrow (arrows we will come to later).
React to the blow; cry out in pain, if it’s a hammer it might knock you to your
knees. If it’s an arrow it probably would knock you to your
knees. We are aiming to have a high level of role playing
action in Dragon Lore LARP and all players will be actively encouraged to react
to hits. They also will be rewarded for doing so with experience points.
Ok now for a bit about bows and arrows. Dragon Lore
LARP allows the use of bows. These bows have to have a draw weight of LESS
the 30lb. Anything above this will not be allowed.
Also the arrows have to be LARP safety arrows. IDV
arrows will not be allowed. They have to have a striking
surface of 50mm or greater. If during combat you get hit by
an arrow please roll play being hit. Stagger sway cry out whatever but please
register that you have been hit. Please do not stand on an
arrow as this will cause it to break and they are rather expensive.
Put it to one side or pass it to a ref if you can. This helps the poor
archer.
Obviously we can not actually do real magic but we can let ourselves go and immerse ourselves in the “game”. In the Dragon lore world magic is present and can be used by skilled artisans of the craft. Magic is used in several ways, by mages in combat to aid the warriors by striking fear and causing damage to their foes. Or by the healer who heals the injured hero who has fallen during the battle. So how do we cast spells? Well whatever way you are comfortable with but remember if you use up all your spells in the first 30 seconds of a battle you are stuck for the rest of the day without any spells. You could just call the name of the spell, but it would be better and more in tune with the role play elements of the “game” to use for example a short mantra for example” By the power of the ancient dragon lords I command the ground to TANGLE YOU!!!” and make a gesture and point at your intended target. If you do the latter and are noticed by the Ref’s you may be rewarded by receiving an experience point to spend. This will enable you to buy more skills at god.
As for healing this can be represented by laying your hands on the fallen hero for 15 to 20 seconds and performing a small chant for example” I heal you” or words to that effect.
Skills
We have included skills that you can purchase with experience points. These skills range from Disarm to Critical Hit. To use these skills you make the call when you want to use them. So for example if you have purchased the disarm skill and want to use it during combat you would do so in the following way. Just before your swords clash you would call “Disarm”. The swords would touch and your opponent would drop his sword. Each skill would be used in a similar way
Abilities
Abilities can be purchased by the player to enhance their
character talents. They range from speaking different languages to weapon
smiths. All these are self explanatory and if you require any
further information please as on our forums.
